The Gospels show you who Jesus is. Acts shows you what His Spirit started doing. Romans shows you how a person is made right with God. 1 Corinthians shows you something none of those quite get to.
It shows you the church.
Not the church you might be imagining. Not a quiet, mature gathering of people who have it all figured out. A real church, a few years in, full of real people who have encountered Jesus and are now trying to live as His people in the middle of an ordinary city. They are getting some things right, and many things badly wrong. They are arguing about leadership. They are tolerating things they should not tolerate. They are taking each other to court. They are turning communion into a class divide. They are competing over spiritual gifts. They are starting to wonder whether the resurrection is even real.
And Paul, who started this church and loves these people, writes them a long letter to help them.
The question this letter answers, more directly than any other book in the New Testament, is the one most believers do not yet know they have. How are we supposed to actually live together as the church? And what do we do when we get it wrong?

Who Wrote It
Paul. The same man who wrote Romans. He had founded the Corinthian church about four or five years earlier, during an eighteen month stay in the city (Acts 18:1-18). After he left, he kept in touch. By the time he writes this letter, around AD 54 or 55 from the city of Ephesus, the news from Corinth is mixed at best.
Some of it came in person, from people in a household belonging to a woman named Chloe (1 Corinthians 1:11). Some came in a letter the Corinthians themselves had sent to Paul, with a list of questions (1 Corinthians 7:1). 1 Corinthians is his response to all of it.
Paul writes here as a father (1 Corinthians 4:15) writing to children he loves and is worried about. The tone is not gentle in places. He is honest about what is going wrong. But under every correction in the letter is unbroken affection. He never writes them off. He never speaks to them as if they have lost their standing in Christ. The first thing he calls them, in the second sentence of the letter, is "saints by calling" (1 Corinthians 1:2). He says it before he has corrected anything.
That is the tone that holds the whole letter together. Hard on what they are doing. Steady on who they are.
Who He Was Writing For
Corinth was a busy, wealthy, cosmopolitan city. A major commercial hub at a crossroads of trade routes, with people from everywhere passing through. It was also famous for its moral permissiveness. The church Paul planted there reflected the city. Wildly diverse. Different ethnic backgrounds. Different social classes. Some wealthy, some poor, some slaves. Some with deep knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures. Many more from a Gentile background with none of that.
These people had encountered Jesus and were learning to share one community across every kind of difference you can imagine. The tensions show up on nearly every page.
If you have just come to Jesus and are starting to look for a community of believers, 1 Corinthians is the most honest book in the Bible about what you are likely to find. People at different stages. People who annoy you. People who get things wrong. And the steady invitation, all the way through, to keep coming back to Jesus together.
The Tone of the Letter
Paul moves between gentle and direct, often in the same paragraph. He works through one issue at a time. Divisions. A serious moral failure. Lawsuits between believers. Marriage and singleness. Food offered to idols. Disorder at communion. Spiritual gifts. The resurrection. Each section is its own conversation.
But underneath all of them is one steady centre. The crucified and risen Christ. Whenever the Corinthians get distracted, Paul drags them back to the cross. The cross is what they all share. It is what they were all bought by. It is the only ground level enough for everyone to stand on together.
He keeps doing this. He cannot help himself. Every time the church starts elevating one person, one gift, one wisdom over another, Paul says, look at the cross. The cross will fix this.
What the Cross Does to a Church
The Corinthians had divided into factions. Some claimed to follow Paul. Some preferred Apollos, a more polished speaker. Some sided with Peter. Some claimed Christ Himself in a way that excluded everyone else (1 Corinthians 1:12).
Paul does not adjudicate. He does something more disarming. He asks three questions. Was Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptised into the name of Paul? (1 Corinthians 1:13). The answer to all three is no. None of these teachers belongs at the centre. Only Christ does. Only Christ was crucified. Only Christ has the right to claim this community as His.
Then Paul says one of the most counterintuitive things in any of his letters.
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18
The cross looks like weakness from the outside. Crucifixion was the most humiliating death the Roman Empire could devise. To the religious of Paul's day, a crucified Messiah was a contradiction in terms. To the philosophical sophisticates of his day, a God who saves the world by being executed was simply absurd.
Paul says yes. Exactly. That is the point.
The cross undoes the world's measuring system. It takes our pride about who is wise, who is strong, who is impressive, and quietly disqualifies all of it. What the cross says, instead, is that anyone who comes to Jesus comes the same way. Empty handed. Bought by His blood. On level ground.
If you have ever wondered why your encounter with Jesus may have looked, from the outside, like something that did not fit anyone's expected categories, you are in good company. The wisdom of God has always looked like foolishness to those who have not yet been arrested by it.
How Are We Supposed to Live Together?
This is the question 1 Corinthians keeps answering, in section after section.
The short answer is: by remembering what the cross has done, and letting love be the environment in which everything else happens.
Paul gives the long version slowly.
He tells them not to look down on each other based on which leader they prefer (1 Corinthians 1 to 4). All of them belong to Christ.
He tells them to take seriously what they are tolerating in their own community (1 Corinthians 5). Love does not mean ignoring damage. Love confronts what is destroying people, gently, with the goal of restoration.
He tells them to stop suing each other in the public courts (1 Corinthians 6). Believers should not air their disputes before a watching world as if Christ has not given them the resources to handle conflict differently.
He tells them their bodies belong to Christ now (1 Corinthians 6). Sexual choices are not private affairs that do not affect anyone else. They are part of who they are as His people.
He tells them, on questions of food and drink and freedom, that the strong should consider the weak (1 Corinthians 8 to 10). Your freedom is a gift, but it stops being a gift the moment it damages someone else's faith.
He tells them to take communion seriously (1 Corinthians 11). Not as a class system where the wealthy eat well and the poor go hungry, but as a meal that proclaims the death of the Lord, with everyone seated together as one body.
He tells them spiritual gifts are not status markers (1 Corinthians 12 to 14). They are tools the Spirit gives to build up the community, not stages on which to perform.
And in the very middle of his teaching on gifts, he writes the chapter that you have probably heard before, even if you do not yet know its context.
Love Is the Environment
1 Corinthians 13 has been read at countless weddings and funerals, often without anyone telling the room why Paul wrote it. He did not write it as a poem. He wrote it as a mirror. A church arguing about leadership, suing each other, dividing at communion, competing over gifts, was a church that had forgotten what love actually is.
Love is patient, love is kind, is not jealous; love does not brag, is not arrogant, does not act disgracefully, does not seek its own benefit; is not provoked, does not keep an account of a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; keeps every confidence, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Read that slowly. Each line is a verb. Patience acts. Kindness acts. Not seeking its own benefit is a daily decision. Not keeping an account of a wrong is a posture you choose to take.
The Greek word Paul uses throughout this chapter is agape (the only Greek word in this whole guide, because it is worth knowing). It is the same love John 3:16 names. The love that sent Jesus into the world. It is not an emotion that rises and falls with how you feel. It is a way of orienting yourself towards another person that holds steady regardless of how they are behaving.
This is not a standard you have to live up to in your own strength. Read 1 Corinthians 13 a second time and notice that every line is also a description of Jesus Himself. He was patient with His disciples. He was kind to people no one else was kind to. He did not seek His own. He bore all things. He endured all things, all the way to a cross.
The love Paul describes is already the love of Christ at work in you by His Spirit. It does not arrive in you all at once. It grows, slowly, as you remain connected to Him.
What Do We Do When We Get It Wrong?
This is the second half of your question, and the honest answer here is one of the most freeing things in the New Testament.
You will get it wrong. Sometimes badly. The Corinthian believers got it badly wrong, and Paul did not write them off. He told them the truth. He grieved with them about it. He gave them practical paths back. And he never, not once, treated them as anything other than the people Jesus had bought with His blood.
Sit with that. Paul confronts them in chapters 5 and 6 with very serious things. Sexual immorality of a kind even the surrounding pagan culture would have flinched at. Lawsuits between brothers. Then he says this:
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
You are not your own. You have been bought with a price.
Paul does not call them back from sin by shaming them. He calls them back by reminding them whose they are. The way out of failure here is not a longer list of rules and a bigger pile of guilt. It is a return to identity. You belong to Christ. Your body belongs to Him. Your future belongs to Him. Live like it.
This is the pattern of the whole letter. Confrontation, then reminder of identity. Honest correction, then the unbroken assurance that they are still His. They are not asked to earn their way back. They are asked to remember whose they are and live from there.
If you fall, this is the doorway home. Not pretending it did not happen. Not crushing yourself with guilt. A simple, direct return to the truth that the cross has paid for the failure already, that the Spirit is still in you, and that you are still His. Confess what is true. Receive what is true. Walk from there.
There is something else worth seeing here. Paul writes this letter to a whole community, not to isolated individuals. When believers get things wrong, the answer is not to disappear and try to fix yourself in private. It is to stay with the body. To bring what is broken into the light, gently. To let other believers help you carry it. The church Paul describes is a community where failure can be brought into the open without ending you.
That is one of the kindest things this letter has to say.
A Promise for the Hard Moments
There is one verse in this letter worth holding onto for the moments when old patterns pull hard. Paul writes that no temptation has overtaken you except what is common to everyone, and God is faithful. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear. With the temptation, He will also provide the way of escape, so that you will be able to endure it (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Paul does not promise that temptation goes away. He promises that in every moment of temptation there is a way through it that does not require you to give in. Not your willpower. God's faithfulness. There is a way out. Look for it.
If you are in a hard stretch right now, that verse is for you. There is always a door. Ask Him for it.
A Few Threads from the Old Testament
Paul reaches back into the Hebrew Scriptures throughout 1 Corinthians, especially in chapter 10, where he retells episodes from Israel's wilderness journey and says they were written for our instruction (1 Corinthians 10:11). Israel's failures and rescues are not just ancient history. They are a kind of mirror. The same dynamics still operate.
The most significant Old Testament connection in the letter is the Passover. In 1 Corinthians 5:7 Paul writes a single line: Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.
The Passover was the foundational rescue moment of the Old Testament. The night God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt by the blood of a lamb applied to the doorposts of every household, so that death passed over those homes (Exodus 12).Jesus is the true Passover lamb. The original was a preview. The blood of the lamb that secured Israel's deliverance from physical slavery has been fulfilled in the blood of Christ that secures every believer's deliverance from the deeper slavery underneath all the others.
If you have come to Jesus, you have been brought through that door.
The Resurrection Holds It All Up
Chapter 15 is the longest sustained teaching on the resurrection anywhere in the New Testament. Some of the Corinthians had started doubting whether the dead would actually be raised. Paul will not let it stand.
He begins by reminding them of the earliest creed of the church.
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
That is the whole gospel in two verses. Died. Buried. Raised. According to what God had been promising for centuries.
Paul then names the witnesses. Peter saw Him. The twelve saw Him. More than five hundred people saw Him at one time, most of them still alive when Paul was writing, available to be questioned (1 Corinthians 15:6). James saw Him. All the apostles saw Him. And finally Paul himself saw Him.
This is not theology. It is testimony.
And then Paul says something the rest of the letter has been resting on. If Christ has not been raised, then everything else collapses (1 Corinthians 15:14). If He has been raised, then everything else stands. The love we extend, the forgiveness we keep giving, the gifts we exercise, the prayers we pray, the falls we keep getting up from, the church we keep returning to, none of it is wasted. It is all building towards a body that will be raised, transformed, made new (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).
The closing line of the chapter is one of the most encouraging sentences in any of Paul's letters.
Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58).
Your toil is not in vain. The love you extend is not wasted. The faithfulness you offer in small, ordinary ways is being kept. Because Jesus rose, what is done in Him lasts.
How to Read 1 Corinthians
Read it after you have spent some time in the Gospels and Acts. The language about the church and the Spirit will mean more if you have already seen the church being born and the Spirit moving.
If you are not sure where to begin, here is something gentle to try. Read chapter 1 first, slowly. Get the feel of the divisions Paul is naming and the cross he keeps pointing to. Then sit with chapters 12 to 14 together, with chapter 13 as the centre, so the love chapter sits where Paul placed it. Then chapter 15, the resurrection. After that, go back to chapter 1 and read the whole letter in order.
Do not skip the difficult sections. The discussions about food and freedom in chapters 8 to 10 may feel remote at first, but the principle Paul is working from, that love for a brother or sister takes priority over the exercise of personal freedom, applies to almost every situation in your life now.
And keep coming back to chapter 13 throughout your life. It is a chapter to grow into.
What 1 Corinthians Means for Your Life Now
If you have come to Jesus and are now starting to look for a community of believers, this letter prepares you honestly. The community will not be perfect. It will be a real group of real people from different backgrounds and different stages of understanding, all trying to live as His people together. Some of them will encourage you. Some of them will frustrate you. Some of them you will love deeply. Some of them you will struggle with. That is the texture of the church Paul describes, and the answer is not to leave when it gets hard. The answer is to keep coming back to the cross together, and to let love be the environment in which everything else happens.
When you get things wrong, and you will, here is the way home. Confess what is true. Remember whose you are. Receive what He has already paid for. Stay in the body. Let other believers help you carry it. Walk forward.
If you are experiencing the gifts of the Spirit (promptings, words, healings, sudden understandings, anything supernatural that you cannot quite explain), 1 Corinthians 12 to 14 is your practical guide. The gifts are real. They are for now. They are given to ordinary believers. They are for building up the church, not for impressing anyone, including yourself. And they always work best inside love.
And if you ever doubt whether any of this is real, return to chapter 15. He died. He was buried. He was raised. Hundreds of witnesses. The whole thing rests on a fact that happened in history, on a specific morning, at a specific tomb that turned out to be empty.
Your toil is not in vain. The love you give is not lost. The faithfulness you offer in small ordinary ways is being kept by Him.
You are bought. You are loved. You are not your own. You are His.
