When God Spoke to You in a Dream
Perhaps you're reading this because you had a dream that felt different; significant, weighty, memorable. Maybe you encountered God the Father in your dream, sensing His love and calling. Maybe you saw Jesus face to face. Maybe you felt the Holy Spirit's presence moving powerfully through your dream.
As you read in the Dreams introduction, God has been speaking through dreams since the beginning of time. He spoke to Joseph, Jacob, Daniel, Mary, and countless others. And He may have spoken to you.
Now you want to understand what He was saying. You want to know what the symbols in your dream mean. That's why you're here.
This page will help you learn the biblical vocabulary God uses in dreams, the people, objects, animals, numbers, colours, and actions that appear throughout Scripture with consistent spiritual meaning. But before we dive into individual symbols, you need to understand something crucial:
Knowing these symbols helps you recognise patterns, but only the Holy Spirit can reveal what God is personally saying to you.
As we'll explore throughout this Dreams section, interpretation belongs to God. These symbols are tools, valuable, biblical, helpful tools but they are not magic keys that automatically unlock every dream. You still need to pray, seek God, test everything against Scripture, and depend completely on the Holy Spirit for revelation.
With that foundation established, let's learn God's poetic language.

Understanding God's Symbolic Language
Throughout Scripture, God communicates through symbols. He uses physical objects, people, animals, numbers, and actions to represent spiritual truths. When He speaks through dreams, He often uses this same symbolic language.
Like a poet or painter, God delights in imagery and metaphor. Understanding biblical symbols can help you recognise patterns in your dreams and provide a foundation for interpretation. But as we established in Dream Interpretation Principles: interpretation belongs to God alone. These symbols are tools to help you hear what the Holy Spirit is saying, they are not a formula that guarantees understanding.
Think of biblical symbols as vocabulary in a language. Knowing vocabulary helps you understand what's being said, but you still need the Holy Spirit to reveal the specific message God is speaking to you personally through your dream.
Important principle: The same symbol can have different meanings depending on context. Water can represent life, cleansing, the Holy Spirit, or overwhelming trouble, depending on how it appears in the dream. Always consider the context, your emotions in the dream, and what Scripture says.
Most important rule: Every interpretation must align with Scripture. If your interpretation contradicts God's Word or His character, it's wrong. The Bible is our foundation and our test for all dream interpretation. And remember: interpretation belongs to the Lord. You need the Holy Spirit's help. Dream interpretation is a working of the Spirit of God, it is supernatural, not formulaic.

How to Use These Symbols
1. Context is everything.
The same symbol can mean different things in different dreams. Always consider:
- Your emotions in the dream
- What was happening around the symbol
- The overall atmosphere of the dream
- Whether the symbol brought peace or fear
2. Scripture is the test.
Every interpretation must align with God's Word. If a symbol seems to mean something that contradicts Scripture, reject that interpretation.
3. Ask the Holy Spirit.
He is your ultimate Teacher. Ask Him to reveal the meaning of symbols in your dreams.
4. Multiple symbols work together.
Don't interpret symbols in isolation. Look at how they relate to each other in the dream.
5. Personal symbolism matters.
Sometimes God uses symbols specific to your life. A dog might represent faithfulness generally, but if you had a beloved childhood dog, God might use that specific memory to communicate something personal.
6. Not everything is symbolic.
Sometimes a dream is straightforward. If you dream about a conversation with someone, it might simply be about that relationship, not a complex symbolic message.
