When Doubt Comes After the Dream: Standing Firm as a New Believer

You saw Him in a dream...

Or perhaps Jesus appeared to you in a vision that changed everything...

You heard His voice calling your name... felt His presence so real it took your breath away. In that moment, you knew.

You had encountered the living God, and nothing would ever be the same again.

Weeks, months passed since that amazing encounter which once held your breath... Then out of nowhere, doubt suddenly whispers...

Did it really happen?

Was it real? Why do I feel so lost, so confused...

Why does this path forward feel so uncertain?

If this describes your journey, I want you to know something important: you are not crazy, you are not weak, and you are not alone. What you are experiencing is part of becoming a follower of Jesus Christ.

I doubted. I searched. And one day, I "accidentally" bumped into Him again.

Even doubt can be a doorway to deeper faith when you know where to turn.

Your Encounter Was Real

The supernatural encounter you had with Jesus was real. The Bible shows us that God has always revealed Himself through dreams, visions, and divine encounters. This is not strange or unusual in Scripture.

The apostle Paul "met" Jesus in a blinding vision on the road to Damascus.

“Who are You, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting, He replied.”(Acts 9:5, BSB).

Like you, Paul's entire life changed in one supernatural moment. Like you, he had to learn what it meant to follow this Jesus who appeared to him.

Throughout the Bible, God spoke to people in dreams.

He said,

“Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, will reveal Myself to him in a vision; I will speak to him in a dream.

(Numbers 12:6, BSB).

Your experience fits within the biblical pattern of how God reaches people.

The question is not whether your encounter was real. The question is: what do you do now? How do you build your new faith on solid ground when everything around you feels uncertain?

Why Doubt Comes to New Believers

When you encounter Jesus supernaturally, He meets you right where you are. Now comes the daily walk of learning to follow Him. This is where many new believers struggle, and it is completely normal.

You may face doubt for several reasons. Perhaps family members or friends who are not followers of Jesus challenge you. Perhaps you feel pressure to return to old spiritual practices. Perhaps you simply do not yet understand what the Bible teaches, and confusion makes you question everything.

The disciple Thomas is famous for his doubts. When the other disciples told him they had seen the risen Jesus, Thomas said,

“Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”

(John 20:25, BSB).

Notice what Jesus did? He did not condemn Thomas for his doubt. Instead, Jesus appeared again and said to Thomas,

“Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.”

 (John 20:27, BSB)

Jesus met Thomas in his doubt and gave him exactly what he needed to believe.

Jesus will do the same for you.

Building on the Rock, Not on Sand

Jesus taught a powerful truth about faith. He said,

“"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.".

 (Matthew 7:24-25, BSB).

Your supernatural encounter with Jesus was the foundation He poured. Now you should continue to build on that foundation, by listening to His words and practicing them. This is the very reason why studying the Bible is not optional for believers. It is essential for your spiritual survival.

When doubt pours like rain, floods your spiritual well being, coupled by the wind beating against your faith, you need something stronger than your memory of an encounter.

You need the Word of God anchoring your soul. The Bible becomes your rock when feelings change and circumstances shift.

This is not about replacing your supernatural experience. It is about building on it with biblical truth so your faith can withstand every storm.

Practical Steps When Doubt Attacks Your Faith

So what do you actually do when doubt comes? Here is biblical guidance for those difficult moments.

First, return to prayer and ask Jesus to strengthen your faith. The father of a sick boy once cried out to Jesus,

Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”

(Mark 9:24, BSB)

This honest prayer acknowledges both faith and doubt. Jesus honoured it then, and He will honour it now when you pray it.

Second, open your Bible and read the words of Jesus. Start with the Gospel of John, which was written

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of

God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

(John 20:31, BSB)

Let the Word of God speak louder than your doubts.

Third, remember that spiritual battles are real. The apostle Peter warned,

"Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour"

(1 Peter 5:8, BSB)

When you left your former spiritual path to follow Jesus, you became a target. Doubt is often a spiritual attack designed to pull you away from Christ.

Fourth, find other believers who can encourage you. The early Christians

"devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer"

(Acts 2:42, BSB).

You were not meant to walk this path alone. Seek out other followers of Jesus who can pray with you and point you back to Scripture when you struggle.

Your Identity Is in Christ, Not in Your Feelings

Perhaps the most important truth for new believers to grasp is this: your relationship with Jesus does not depend on how you feel. It depends on what He has done.

You may not feel close to Jesus every day. Your emotions may fluctuate wildly. Some days you may feel nothing at all. But listen to what Jesus promised:

"Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me,

and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away"

(John 6:37, BSB)

Did you come to Jesus?

Did you respond to His call in that dream or vision?

Then He will never drive you away. Never. This promise does not change based on your feelings or your doubts or your confusion.

The apostle Paul wrote,

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39, BSB)

Read that again slowly. Nothing can separate you from God's love in Jesus. Not your doubts. Not your questions. Not your confusion. Nothing.

Moving Forward with Confidence

The journey from a supernatural encounter to mature faith takes time. Be patient with yourself as you learn. Every follower of Jesus has walked through seasons of doubt and questions. These seasons do not disqualify you; they refine you.

Continue to read your Bible daily, even if only a few verses. Pray honestly to Jesus about your struggles. Seek out biblical teaching that helps you understand what you believe and why. Remember the moment when Jesus revealed Himself to you, but do not try to live on that memory alone. Build on it with the solid rock of Scripture.

Jesus said,

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free"

(John 8:32, BSB)

As you study God's Word, truth will replace confusion. Knowledge will push out doubt. The freedom you tasted in your supernatural encounter will deepen into lasting peace.

You are not alone in this journey. The same Jesus who appeared to you in that dream or in your encounter walks with you now, even when you cannot feel His presence. Trust His promise. Stand on His Word. Let the Bible become your anchor when doubt threatens to pull you away.

Your encounter was the beginning.

Now comes the beautiful, challenging, transforming work of learning to follow Jesus Christ every single day.
