The Gospel of John
WHEN YOU NEED TO KNOW IT'S REAL
John does not begin where the others do.
Matthew opens with a genealogy. Mark opens with a baptism. Luke opens with an angel visiting an old priest in the temple. John opens with this: in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Before the manger. Before Abraham. Before the world had a shape. Jesus was. That is John's first sentence and it is also his whole argument.
This is the Gospel that goes deepest. The other three show you Jesus through His works, teachings, and journey. John presses deepest into who He is. Long conversations. Slow revelations. Seven sentences that begin with the words I am. The longest single prayer of Jesus recorded anywhere in Scripture. A Last Supper scene that takes up nearly five chapters because every syllable matters.
If you came to Jesus through an encounter, through something that was not an argument or a sermon but a person, then John is the Gospel that puts His own voice in your hand. What you felt was a person. Here is His name. Here is what He says about Himself.

Who Wrote It
The author identifies himself only as the disciple whom Jesus loved (John 21:20). Early church tradition names him as John, the son of Zebedee, one of the twelve, and one of three disciples who saw things the other nine did not. The transfiguration. Gethsemane. The room where Jesus raised the dead twelve year old girl back to life.
If that is the same John, he was the youngest of the twelve when he followed Jesus, and he was also the longest lived. By the time he wrote this Gospel, probably in the AD 80s or 90s, he was an old man who had spent his entire adult life thinking about Jesus. The other three Gospels were already in circulation. He was not trying to repeat them. He was writing the things he had carried in his heart for sixty years.
That is why John reads the way it does. It is not the urgency of Mark or the careful research of Luke. It is the slow, settled voice of someone who has loved Jesus for a very long time, and who knows exactly which parts of the story have to be told.
There is one detail in the Gospel worth holding onto. At the cross, when Jesus is dying, He looks down and sees His mother standing there with this disciple. He says to her, woman, behold your son. And to him, behold your mother. From that hour, the disciple took her into his own home (John 19:26-27). That is not a footnote. That is the kind of thing you remember the rest of your life. He is writing as a man who once stood at the foot of a cross and was given a family.
Who He Was Writing For
John tells you his purpose directly, near the end of the book.
Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that by believing you may have life in His name.
John 20:30-31
That is the whole project. Not to give you a complete account of everything Jesus did, but to give you what you need to believe, and through believing, to have life in His name. He selected what he wrote to draw out one thing. The identity of Jesus.
John was writing for everyone. Not just Jews. Not just Romans. Anyone who would pick up the book and ask the question, who is this man.
You are who he was writing for.
The Tone of the Book
John is meditative. Long conversations. Long pauses. Themes that come back like waves. The words used are simple on purpose. Light. Life. Love. Truth. Bread. Water. Vine. Door. Word. The vocabulary is small enough for a child to recognise and deep enough that you can spend a lifetime in it.
It is also the Gospel most willing to slow down. The conversation with the Samaritan woman in chapter 4 is forty two verses long and almost all of it is talking. The teaching at the Last Supper in chapters 13 to 17 is five chapters of one continuous evening. The trial before Pilate in chapters 18 and 19 lingers on the questions Pilate asks Jesus and the silences in between.
Read John slowly. It was written that way on purpose.
Why He Came: The Identity of Jesus
Matthew tells you why Jesus came through names and promises. Mark tells you through verbs. Luke tells you through faces. John tells you through identity. Through what Jesus says about Himself in His own voice.
The Word Became Flesh
The first eighteen verses of John are unlike anything else in the four Gospels. They are written like poetry, and they say the most extraordinary thing.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
The Word who was in the beginning, who was with God, who was God, became flesh. He took on a human face. He walked into the world He had made. The verb translated dwelt carries the sense of pitching a tent, settling in, moving in among us. He did not visit. He came to stay.
Read that twice. The God who made the universe took on skin and bones and lived in a town and ate fish and got tired walking and wept at His friend's grave. That is who Jesus is in John. Not a man who became close to God. God who became close to us.
The Seven I Am Statements
Seven times in this Gospel Jesus opens His mouth and starts a sentence with the words I am. Each one is a different doorway into the same person.
I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will not hunger (John 6:35).
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in the darkness (John 8:12).
I am the door. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved (John 10:9).
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11).
I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even if he dies (John 11:25).
I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6).
I am the true vine. Apart from Me you can do nothing (John 15:5).
These are not titles He is borrowing. They are claims about who He actually is, made in language ordinary enough that anyone could understand and bold enough that no ordinary person would dare make them.
If you are hungry for something the world cannot satisfy, He is the bread. If you are walking in the dark, He is the light. If you cannot find the way home, He is the door. If you feel lost, He is the shepherd looking for you. If you are afraid of dying, He is the resurrection. If you cannot see how to live, He is the way. If you are trying to bear fruit out of yourself and cannot, He is the vine.
There is a thread running through all seven. Each one is an invitation. He is not announcing Himself to be admired. He is offering Himself to be received.
The Sign for the Lost
This Gospel records seven specific miracles, which are called signs. Each one points beyond itself to who Jesus is. Water turned into wine at a wedding (John 2). A Roman official's son healed from a distance (John 4). A man crippled for thirty eight years told to get up and walk (John 5). Five thousand people fed with five small loaves and two fish (John 6). Walking on the sea (John 6). A man born blind given his sight (John 9). And then the seventh and greatest, the one the whole book has been building towards.
Lazarus, His friend, has been dead four days when Jesus arrives at the tomb. Lazarus' sister Martha is heartbroken. Jesus speaks to her quietly.
I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even if he dies (John 11:25).
He weeps at the tomb. The shortest verse in the Bible is here: Jesus wept (John 11:35). And then He calls Lazarus by name, and Lazarus walks out, still in his grave clothes.
That is the sign that finishes the book's argument. Death itself answers when Jesus speaks. If He has authority over the grave, He has authority over everything else as well.
The Conversations Worth Reading Slowly
Three particular conversations sit close to the surface of this Gospel, and each one is worth a slow reading on its own.
A respected religious teacher named Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night. Jesus tells him, you must be born again (John 3:3). He explains it patiently. Not a different lifestyle. A different birth. A new life that comes from the Spirit of God, not from anything you can produce yourself. And in the middle of that conversation, Jesus says the most quoted sentence in the Bible.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16
Hold that one. That single sentence is why He came. Love. A Father who would not lose the world He made. A Son willing to be given. An invitation open to everyone.
In chapter 4 He sits at a well in the heat of the day and asks a Samaritan woman for water. She is an outsider three times over, in race, in religion, and in her personal life. He tells her her whole story without shaming her, offers her water that will become a spring in her, and tells her plainly who He is. She runs back to her town and brings everyone she knows. The first person in this Gospel who fully understands who Jesus is and tells other people is a woman everyone else had written off.
In chapter 9 He heals a man born blind. The religious leaders interrogate the man trying to discredit Jesus. The man finally answers them with the most disarming sentence in the Gospel: one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see (John 9:25). He cannot give them the doctrinal answers they want. He can only describe what happened to him.
If anyone asks you about your encounter with Jesus and you cannot give a perfect explanation, that is fine. The man in John 9 is your model. Tell them what you do know.
The Father, the Son, and the Helper
The relationship inside God comes through more clearly in John than in any other Gospel.
Jesus speaks about the Father constantly. He says I and the Father are one (John 10:30). He says he who has seen Me has seen the Father (John 14:9). He says that He came from the Father and is going back to the Father, and that everything He does is what He sees the Father doing (John 5:19). The love between the Father and the Son is the foundation of the universe, and you are being let inside it.
And then in chapters 14 to 16, the night before He dies, He spends most of the evening teaching His disciples about someone they have not yet met.The Holy Spirit. He calls Him the Helper. The Greek word is Parakletos, which means one called alongside. Someone who comes to your side and stays there.
Jesus promises He is going to ask the Father, and the Father is going to give them another Helper, who will be with them forever (John 14:16). The Spirit of truth, who will live in them and never leave (John 14:17). The one who will teach them everything and bring back to their memory everything Jesus said (John 14:26). The one who will testify about Jesus to their hearts (John 15:26).
If you have felt drawn to Jesus, comforted, taught, gently corrected, made to know things you did not know before, that is the Helper Jesus was talking about. He is doing exactly what Jesus said He would do. He is bringing Jesus close.
And in chapter 17, the night of His arrest, Jesus prays out loud in front of His disciples. Read the whole prayer slowly. He prays for Himself. He prays for His disciples. And then He turns the prayer outwards.
I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one, just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
John 17:20-21
Sit with that. The night before He died, Jesus prayed for everyone who would ever believe in Him through the words of His disciples. That includes you. He had you in mind. The prayer He prayed has not stopped working.
Why He Came: The Cross
The cross in John is not chaos. It is glory. Jesus walks into it like a man finishing the work He came to do.
When the soldiers come to arrest Him in the garden, He asks who they are looking for. They say Jesus the Nazarene. He answers, I am. They fall to the ground (John 18:6). Even arrested, He is still in command.
When Pilate questions Him about whether He is a king, Jesus answers: My kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36). Pilate has no real authority over Him. He chooses to stay.
And on the cross, the last thing He says is recorded. It is one word in Greek. Tetelestai. It means it is finished. Or it is accomplished. Or paid in full. Roman tax records have been found with the same word stamped across them. Debt paid (John 19:30).
Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. He is not killed. He gives. Right to the end.
This is the John version of why He came. Everything that ever stood between you and the Father, every failure, every shame, every thing done in darkness, was placed on Him at the cross. And what He said as it ended was, it is finished. Not partly. Not on credit. Finished.
You are not working towards forgiveness. You are living from a finished work.
The Empty Tomb and the Beach
Three days later Mary Magdalene comes to the tomb in the dark. The stone is gone. She runs to tell Peter and the disciple Jesus loved. They run back. The tomb is empty. The grave clothes are folded. They go home.
Mary stays. She is weeping. A man speaks to her. She thinks He is the gardener and asks if He has taken the body. He says one word. Mary. And she knows His voice (John 20:16).
The risen Jesus calls her by name. The first person to see Him alive is the woman who would not stop looking.
A few chapters later, there is one more story. Peter has been broken since denying Jesus three times in the courtyard the night of the arrest. He has gone back to fishing. Jesus appears on the beach in the morning, makes them breakfast, and then asks Peter three questions. Peter, do you love Me? Peter, do you love Me? Peter, do you love Me? Three times, one for each denial. And three times Peter says yes. And three times Jesus tells him to feed His sheep (John 21:15-17).
Jesus did not let Peter live with the denials. He came back specifically to undo them.
Whatever you have done that you cannot stop replaying in your mind, He has come back specifically to undo it for you too.
A Few Threads from the Old Testament
John is full of Old Testament echoes, but they work differently from Matthew's. The story does not stop to point them out. They are woven in.
Jesus is the bread that came down from heaven, like the manna God gave Israel in the wilderness, but better, because this bread gives life forever (John 6:48-51). He is the good shepherd that the prophet Ezekiel had promised God would Himself become one day (Ezekiel 34, John 10). He is the true vine, and Israel had been called God's vine for centuries (Isaiah 5, John 15). He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), the fulfilment of every Passover lamb that had ever been killed.
And the I am statements themselves carry the weight of the holiest name in the Hebrew Scriptures. When Moses asked God His name at the burning bush, God answered, I am who I am (Exodus 3:14). When Jesus says I am the bread, I am the light, I am the resurrection, He is using the language of God speaking to Moses. The Jewish leaders understood it perfectly. In John 8:58 He says, before Abraham was born, I am. They picked up stones to kill Him. They knew exactly what He was claiming.
He is who He says He is.
A Note About Parables
John's Gospel does not really contain parables in the way the other three do. It has long discourses, conversations, signs, and a few short word pictures (the good shepherd, the true vine), but no kingdom stories of seed and soil and yeast.
That work is already done in Matthew, Mark and Luke. If you want the parables, those are the Gospels to read. John has his own way of opening Jesus to you, and it is mostly through Jesus' own voice in long, unhurried conversations. Read John for that.
How to Read John
Read it slowly. John was written to be lingered over.
If you are not sure where to begin, here is something gentle to try. Read chapter 1 first. The prologue at the beginning is one of the highest passages in the Bible, and the calling of the first disciples at the end of the chapter is one of the warmest. Then sit with chapter 3, the Nicodemus conversation, where John 3:16 sits. Then read chapter 14, where Jesus promises the Helper and tells His disciples not to let their hearts be troubled. After that, go back to chapter 1 and read the whole Gospel in order.
As you read, notice the I am statements. Notice the conversations. Notice the seven signs. Notice how often the word love appears, especially in the second half of the book.
Notice also John's quietest sentence about himself. He never names himself. He only describes himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved (John 13:23, John 19:26, John 20:2, John 21:7, John 21:20). Some people find that arrogant. It is the opposite. By the time he wrote this Gospel, the only thing John had left to say about himself was that Jesus loved him. That is enough of an identity for any of us.
What John Means for Your Life Now
If you came to Jesus through an encounter, John was written for you.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The God you cannot see, you have seen. The love you felt has a name and a face and a history.
The seven I am statements are not abstract. They are addressed to you. If you are hungry for something nothing has filled, He is the bread. If you are afraid of the dark, He is the light. If you cannot see the way forward, He is the way. If you are afraid of death, your own or someone you love, He is the resurrection.
The Helper Jesus promised in chapters 14 to 16 is the same Spirit who is at work in you now. When something inside you has nudged you towards Him, here is language for that: the Helper may be drawing you closer to Jesus. Every time a verse has come alive while you were reading it, that has been the Helper. Every time you have known something about Jesus you could not explain how you knew, that has been the Helper. He is the one Jesus called the one called alongside, and He is alongside you.
The prayer Jesus prayed in John 17 included you in advance. He had you in mind the night before He died. The work He finished on the cross was finished for you.
And the same Jesus who called Mary by name at the empty tomb, who came to a beach to undo Peter's denials over breakfast, is the Jesus who came to you. He has not changed. He still calls people by name. He still finds the ones who cannot stop replaying their failures and gently undoes them. He still comes to where you are.
Begin with John. Let it give you the voice you have been hearing.
