Dreams: Messages in the Night
God Has Always Spoken Through Dreams
From the very beginning, God has used dreams to reach human hearts. Throughout Scripture, dreams are one of His most intimate ways of communicating speaking to us when our conscious minds are quiet, when we're most receptive, when the noise of daily life cannot drown out His voice.
If you've had a dream that felt different, that stayed with you, that seemed to carry weight and meaning beyond ordinary dreaming, you may have heard from God. You're not alone. He's been speaking this way since the beginning of time.

Dreams Throughout Biblical History
The Father Speaks in Dreams
The Father has guided His people through dreams across all of history.
He gave Joseph dreams that revealed his future and his calling.
Genesis 37:5-10
He spoke to Jacob in a dream at Bethel, showing him a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending, and promised,
"I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go."
Genesis 28:12-15
He warned Abimelech in a dream not to touch Sarah, Abraham's wife, protecting both the king and God's promises.
Genesis 20:3
He gave Pharaoh dreams that Joseph interpreted, saving Egypt and the surrounding nations from famine.
Genesis 41:1-36
The Father spoke to Solomon in a dream, offering him whatever he desired. When Solomon asked for wisdom instead of wealth or long life, God was pleased and granted his request along with riches and honour.
1 Kings 3:5-15
He spoke to Daniel, giving him understanding of visions and dreams, and revealing mysteries that no other wise man could interpret. Daniel 1:17; 2:19
Dreams Continued in the New Testament
The Father continued guiding through dreams even after Jesus came.
He warned Joseph in a dream to take Mary as his wife, Matthew 1:20, then warned him again to flee to Egypt to protect the infant Jesus, Matthew 2:13, and later told him when it was safe to return. Matthew 2:19-20
He warned the wise men in a dream not to return to Herod, protecting the Christ child.
Matthew 2:12
He warned Pilate's wife in a dream about Jesus' innocence, giving testimony even to those outside the faith.
Matthew 27:19
The Promise for Today
And then God made this promise through the prophet Joel:
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams."
Acts 2:17 (quoting Joel 2:28)
This promise was fulfilled at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon believers. But it didn't stop there. The Spirit is still being poured out. God is still speaking. Dreams remain one of the ways He reaches hearts that are searching, reveals truth to those who need guidance, and calls people into relationship with Him.
If God has spoken to you in a dream, you're walking in the footsteps of Joseph, Jacob, Daniel, and countless others who heard His voice while they slept.

Your Dream May Have Been Your First Encounter
Many people first encounter God through a dream. Perhaps that's your story too.
Did You Encounter the Father in Your Dream?
Maybe you sensed a father figure in your dream, someone protective, loving, calling you by name. Perhaps you felt overwhelming acceptance, like you were finally coming home. You heard a voice that felt paternal, strong yet tender, telling you that you belonged, that you were wanted, that you were loved.
If this resonates with you, you may have encountered God the Father in your dream.

Did You See Jesus in Your Dream?
Perhaps Jesus appeared to you while you slept. You saw Him clearly, heard Him speak your name, felt His presence. Maybe you witnessed the cross, saw His sacrifice, or simply knew He was standing beside you. His appearance was so real, so vivid, that you woke up changed.
If this resonates with you, you may have encountered God the Son in your dream.

Did You Feel the Spirit's Presence in Your Dream?
Maybe your dream wasn't about a person you could see, but about a presence you could feel. You experienced supernatural peace, power moving through you, conviction about truth, or transformation happening inside you. You might have sensed fire, wind, light, or simply known that something divine was at work.
If this resonates with you, you may have encountered the Holy Spirit in your dream.

Thousands of people around the world have encountered God through dreams. Amara, a university student in London, had never believed in God. One night she dreamed of a man in brilliant white who simply said, "I love you." She woke up weeping. That dream became the beginning of her journey to discover who Jesus was. Your dream may be the beginning of yours too.

God Still Speaks Today
He has not changed. His love has not diminished. His desire to communicate with you is as strong now as it was when He spoke to Joseph, to Daniel, to Mary.
God's Primary Voice: His Word
Before we explore dreams, it's essential to understand how God primarily speaks today. Scripture tells us:
"Long ago God spoke to our fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways. But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son"
Hebrews 1:1-2
God's primary revelation to us is His Word, the Bible and the person of Jesus Christ. The Scriptures are complete, sufficient, and the standard by which we test everything else. As Paul wrote to Timothy:
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness"
2 Timothy 3:16
Dreams, visions, and other experiences must always be measured against Scripture. If anything contradicts God's written Word, we reject it. The Bible is our foundation, our authority, our primary way of hearing God's voice.

Dreams as One Way God Can Speak
That said, Scripture clearly shows us that God can and does use dreams. When God speaks through a dream, He is reaching into your inner world, speaking to your spirit in ways that transcend ordinary consciousness. He uses symbols, emotions, encounters, and revelations that can bypass your conscious defences and speak directly to your heart.
The God who created sleep designed this state of rest. In His sovereignty, He can use dreams as an opportunity to speak to you reaching you when the noise of daily distractions fades, when you're vulnerable and open in ways you might not be when you're awake.

Why Dreams Matter
Some dreams are simply your mind processing the day's events. But some dreams are different. You know they're different. They stay with you. They carry weight. They feel important, even if you don't understand why.
While Scripture doesn't give us a checklist to identify God-given dreams, those who have received them throughout history often describe similar experiences. God-given dreams frequently share certain characteristics:
-
They feel more vivid and real than ordinary dreams
-
You remember them clearly, sometimes for years
-
They carry emotional weight or spiritual significance
-
They contain symbols or messages that seem purposeful
-
They align with biblical principles and God's character
-
They bring peace, conviction, warning, or direction
These patterns can be helpful, but the ultimate test is this: Any dream from God will align perfectly with Scripture. If a dream contradicts God's Word or His character revealed in the Bible, it is not from Him. God never contradicts Himself.
If you've had a dream that aligns with these patterns and with Scripture, don't dismiss it. God may have been speaking to you.

You Are Heard
God sees you. He knows the questions you carry, the fears that wake you in the night, the hopes you hold close to your heart. He cares about every detail of your life, and He wants to speak into it. Dreams are one of the ways He does this, one of the ways He reminds you that you are not alone, that He is near, that He is guiding you.
Do not be afraid of the dreams He gives you. Do not dismiss them or think they are meaningless. God does not waste His words. If He has spoken to you in a dream, it is because He loves you and has something He wants you to know.
What to Do When God Speaks in Dreams
Write it down.
As soon as you wake, record everything you remember. Details matter. Symbols matter. Emotions matter. Don't wait—dreams fade quickly.
Pray over it.
Ask God to reveal the meaning. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding. He will not leave you confused.
Search the Scriptures.
Many dream symbols have biblical meanings. Look for similar symbols, patterns, and themes in God's Word.
Be patient.
Some dreams are understood immediately. Others take time. God reveals meaning in His time, often as you're ready to receive it.
Test everything.
Not every dream is from God. Some are simply your mind processing stress or fear. Any dream from God will align with Scripture, point you toward Jesus, and reflect God's character of love, truth, and holiness.
